What to do when a loved one dies?

I have a to-do list for Death. What should one do when a loved one dies? Well, first off, acknowledge their presence and now, their absence from your life. Surround yourself with love. Self love, love from other loved ones or even just well wishers. You will need help! Take all the help that is offered. Remember this time. Grief will reduce, pain will subside but never forget the support you received. Never forget the people who were there for you.

Don't be shy of tears and emotions. Cry as much as you want. It will help you with your grief.

Go through your loved ones things. Their vlothes, personal belongings. Do not avoid this task. This will help process their absence sooner rather than later. Do not let grief sit and rot. Face it head on! Remember this time of need. And remember to be the support when someone needs you. Be strong with grief. It is coming for everyone. No one can avoid it. Where there is extreme love, there is extreme grief. Today or tomorrow, doesn't matter.

Think of Death as the ultimate truth, just like birth and breath. It is the end of a journey that started with our birth! It is the destination and there is nothing wrong in reaching your destination. That is the ultimate goal, right?

Yes, some deaths are painful and pain is scary. But pain is also a lot of mindgame. You might think, someone didn't deserve to die, that their time on Earth wasn't up yet. But we cant say or decide when our journey will end. Death just like birth, is not in our control. We can only control few things, really. Such as taking care of our body to the best of our knowledge, taking care of our mental and financial health. But things can and do go wrong many times. And, that is ok. Life isn't fair, was never fair and never will be. Life is just life! It is a mixed bag of treats.

What remains is your love

 I know you are gone.

Gone, never to return!

But I am here,

living, breathing, surviving

I am lucky to have him still,

Him and him and him. (Husband, Brother and Father)

These men are now my paulbearers.

Paulbearers of what's left of my soul and heart.

They will help me carry on,

until the next one falls.

Hopefully, by then, I'll be over grief.

Grief and Death, will not be a shock anymore.

I am numb to shock.

Numb to this pain.

I know, it is possible.

You are gone,

but what remains is your love.

Your love is in me.

I grew up, happy and secure.

I can adult because of love.

Thank you for being a loving person.

I never realised, your greatest gift was

Your Love to me!

Grief!

I am not scared of dying,

of Death per say.

The trauma leading to it scares me.

But I know, I'll be ok.

I started bit of Yoga now.

To keep my body alive and well.

To make Death easier as well.

Grief has taken a new form, Mother

I miss you everyday but tears don't bother.

Sometimes, it hits me,

how you suddenly disappeared in front of my eyes.

How I don't hear your voice or laughter

or don't see the twinkle in your eyes.

And now the tears come, Mother

I still miss you.

But there is no emptiness in my heart anymore.

I just have the Death ripper looming around me

constantly reminding me,

that it is coming

Any moment, anyone can be gone.

To hold what is dear even tighter.

Some days I am at peace with you gone.

You won't see more horrors of the living,

of people dying everyday.

Before they truly die one day.

My Father

 I barely talk to you

'Cause, we don't chat much anyway.

I don't see your love in words and long conversations.

But now, that mum is gone, I see it

I see your love in how you take care of the little things

How you make sure, everything is spick and span

How the clothes are ironed right

or the water is filled

or there is milk in the fridge.

I see how you take care of the little things around the house.

You were always the caring horse,

that loved through actions

but could never talk

The one that was born with a stunted mouth

I miss my childhood family unit

I miss being a child

I love you, Dad

And Sorry, we could never talk.

This love was never meant to be the regular way.

You did not prepare me

You did not prepare me for this.
This vacuum around your name
I fumble to call out, mummy.
I don't know how to deal with this nothingness.
This death surrounding us all.
Waiting by the door,
Keeping a tab on when the time is up.
The one thing we can never control,
Is when death will embrace us.

You did not prepare me for your loss.
For the what will be without your smile or sound.
For where will I look for advice,
What will I do without you.
I did not know,
how deeply I loved you.
Until you were gone!

I want to think about Death

I want to think about Death.

Almost all the time,

a constant reminder that

it is lurking around the corner.

Waiting to show itself when

it feels fit.

I want to think about Death.

In times, when I feel greedy,

In times, when I laugh

Every morning,

is a constant reminder of Death.

Of my Mum gone

And many others that die everyday.

It hits different on some days.

Today, I am nauseous.

Yesterday, I was disgusted with myself.

Thought of Death, hits different everyday.

Don't look Forward to

I don't look forward to
Those morning sunrises anymore.
Each day ahead, is a day less with you.
I dread going back home, Dad
'Cause that's far for you.
But my Life is there,
With him beside me.

I don't look forward to
Those morning sunrises anymore.
'Cause I dread what turn your Health will take, Love.
I'm scared to count the possible sunrises with you.
I want to sleep beside you forever and ever.

Your soft hands

Your hands were so soft,
Like a cloud of cotton.
I could feel the love and warmth in their softness.
It was a reflection of your tender heart.
Your name, literally means, the art of love.
And love you did.
You loved your bloodline,
Your husband and your child.
You loved your brothers,
Your mother and it wasn't mild.
You remembered birthdays and anniversaries.
Roses and dogs.
Loved the nature and outdoors,
Loved your long walks.
Your beautiful athletic body,
Stayed perfect through the end.
And then there were your lovely black hair,
That no one could ignore.
You remained your beautiful, athletic self,
Right till the end.
It's the heart and the brain that gave way,
To help you meet your end.
Love you forever, love your long hair.
I have inherited your looks,
And I will cherish it with care.

Spain - Andalusian Sky and Medditarean Sea

Spain is beautiful! A week there and I already knew that I would visit the country again. The weather and the roads are perfect for a road trip, even on a motorbike. I was able to explore this country, thanks to a cousin's destination wedding.

We visited Marbella, Malaga and Barcelona - the vast stretch on the East coast of Spain. And the North and South were completely different from eaxh other. The Catalonian roots in Barcelona and the fact that it is a major city, make it different from the quietness of Marbella and the old historic culture of Malaga.

The water was cold so we couldn't go swimming but it was amazing to walk in the Sun and feel the warmth - completely different experience from the rainy and windy cold Belfast. Out of all the three cities, I find Marbella the most liveable and lovable. Maybe because I got enough time to explore the town, walk the famous Golden Mile, explore the rich part of Marbella, go on a yacht and enjoy an amazing quiet dinner at a 2-star Michelin restaurant - Skina.

After I landed at the airport in Malaga and was on a bus to Marbella, the first thing I noticed was the trees. They reminded me of Socotra - an island off the coast of Yemen. I have only seen photos of the island and wish to visit it some day but the trees in Malaga reminded me of it.

We had a bit of a adventure after the wedding in Malaga. Our flight by Vueling to Barcelona was initially delayed and then finally cancelled.

Your Death!

I remember the suffocated face as breath struggled to come through your mouth. The death rattle was quite distinct. But he resuscitated you or at least tried hard. I knew you were gone then but my mind wouldn’t accept it. My mind thought this is some trickery, like a bad tide that will turn over. Then the ambulance came and kept trying! With CPR and then with the defibrillator. Nothing worked. Your brain was starved of oxygen for 20 minutes! They finally found a pulse, a faint one. And then I sat in the front seat of the ambulance and the siren went on! My first, very personal experience with an Ambulance.

You were rushed to the resuscitation room. And my anxiety shot the roof! The first thing I thought of was cancelling our flight tickets. I don’t know why, in that moment, in that tiny relatives’ waiting room for resus patients, I thought of calling the airlines to cancel the tickets. Mind has a weird way of handling shock. That was the first sleepless night at the hospital, followed by many.

The first doctor in the ICU was very worried for you. He said, the brain has been starved of oxygen for 20 minutes and I am very concerned for her consciousness. I should have taken the cue from there but didn’t. Your consciousness was lost forever, gone! Later as I read more about Hypoxic brain injury in aged patients, I failed to find one positive example of someone who had come back from that. And even if they did comeback, it wasn’t really a life they wished for. It is a life full of dependence – something you wouldn’t want. I also read that a brain cell can die with just under four minutes of lack of oxygen. Those precious moments, the golden moments of reviving someone quickly from a stroke or cardiac arrest are so important. CPR is so important!

Within the first hour of your hospitalisation, a stent was put in place! And we thought, that’s it! You survived and will forever remain, a heart patient, but will live.

You had a second cardiac arrest, and we slept at the hospital in the relatives’ accommodation. And after that, you were stable. For the next one week, I would call every morning, get angry at him for calling me and keeping the line busy. Because I was your emergency contact number and needed the line free in case the ICU called. And then, the MRI report came in. It was confirmed. Your brain damage was beyond repair. I stopped calling the ICU, I knew I had to be ready for the inevitable. But I would visit you every day. He would visit you every day. This was his way of making up for not being there for his father’s death.

For the next three weeks, I clung to your warm body. The same body that nurtured me and cared for me when it was able to. I kissed your head, full of your beautiful hair. The ICU nurses loved your hair and loved braiding it!

When they took you off the ventilator, I slept in the icy cold ICU room for three nights, no washing, no bathing. All because I didn’t want to miss the moment, you would go. But you survived another week! You no longer needed to be in the ICU, so were moved to a ward, where you suddenly became stable and instantly felt at peace. I could tell you were at peace because your heart rate was normal and so was your blood pressure. Your body was happy to be in that ward. It was full of sunlight and there was a window! I was happy to be there with you. Sleeping together, you on the bed and me on the camping bed, we got from a friend. I heard your body snore, and it made me smile. You always snored in your sleep; it was normal to those who knew you.

I wish I could talk to you about this experience. The cold ICU, the sleepless nights. The worry, the chaos. You were sleeping away while chaos surrounded you. There was crying, prayers, video and phone calls. Arguing with the doctors and the nurses, me and others hanging by a thread of hope of reviving you. Three weeks of back and forth to the Hospital. Three weeks of me hoping to see you open your eyes and acknowledging my presence. Me praying each day and encouraging you to open your eyes. You did open your eyes, finally, you did! But it was a blank stare in space, you looked up. Was it death you were looking at? You didn’t acknowledge me or anyone. You never regained consciousness.

You died in your sleep. The heart rate reduced from that of a marathon runner to that of someone at rest. Your pulse dropped and your youngest brother was there. He held your hands as your body died with the last pulse and all hope of ever reviving you died with it. But to me, you had died when your consciousness passed away. The same consciousness that made you love me, care for me that made you, my Mother!

I hate to think that your work was done. But I don’t blame you for your death, I am not angry with you for dying. No one wants to die, at least I know you didn’t, just like your mother didn’t and yet you both did. I don’t want to die, I want to live and yet one day, I will die as well and so will other people I know or don’t know.

Your death has taught me what true sadness is, what grief means. I never experienced heaviness on my chest before, the way I did when you passed away. But I will survive, I know I will, even if I think I won’t, I will.

We shall never know what happens after death until our bodies pass through that stage. I will always love you, Mom, but I am getting tired of the nightmares. Will I forget you, Mother? Did you forget your, Mother? No, you didn’t. I know that because you kept remembering her. And I wasn’t there to help you grieve her. I am so sorry to not understand your pain back then. I am so sorry to not understand your hormones and pain when you had the hysterectomy! I am so sorry to not be able to talk to you all the time. To not understand that you needed me and my time. That you needed a listening ear! I was just busy with my silly life, my job, my visas and my travels. I didn’t care for you enough and now you are gone. You don’t have to care for me or worry about me anymore. You are a free soul, doing whatever it needs to do.

But your death made me worry for the loved ones around me. Brought me closer to others. Maybe that is what death does. A constant reminder that it is just around the corner, and you need to live your life till you can and before death arrives.

During your time at the ICU, I kept thinking, so many people have passed away while my mother awaits Death. The fire at the ski resort in Turkey, the American Airlines plane crash with the military helicopter! All these lives just gone before yours.

I am happy with your death, because I know it was a beautiful death! It was the kind of death people can only wish for. Pain-free, conscious free and peaceful! The good care provided by the doctors and nurses ensured you were peaceful in your death. They didn’t want you to live a life of dependence – in a vegetative state. That would be selfish, not thinking about Pramila’s wellbeing! And I remembered your words, you always wanted to die peacefully! Without knowing, in an eternal sleep. You never wanted to be dependent on anyone. You finally got the death you wanted, Mum! And I got what I wanted! To be beside you when you die. Maybe this whole charade was played for my closure. When I heard your “end-of-life” breathing, the last night your body was alive, I knew it is a matter of hours or days that you will be gone. Gone not just in consciousness but in body as well.

I don’t know how to grieve properly, or in a healthy way. Is there a healthy way to grieve someone? He says, I wear your clothes all the time. But I wear them because I like them. I have donated so many! Days are bearable but nights are hard! Help me, move on...

A small place

Deep saffron hued-beauty appears suddenly in the sky.

As my eyes look at the Moon,

a gentle breeze envelops me.

Quiet. So quiet all around me.

A dim hum of the cars roaring in the city I see,

in front of me.

The dazzling lights are so far,

yet in my sight.

I see the quietness of the hills nearby and the mountains afar.

And the dazzling city lights in my sight.

No love for big cities anymore,

I love the smallness of a place.

The hills and the sea,

the quietness where I hear a kid cry,

or the cars roar from afar.

No love for Mumbai or London anymore.

Don't take me to Amsterdam anymore.

Give me the smallness of a place.

Belfast, you changed me!

Deep as this night darkens

Going by my husband's request to write travel blogs with a very sympathetic face,  I have got this urge to pen down some thoughts.

Deep as this night darkens,
My thoughts plunge within my mind.
In the quietness of the moment,
true thoughts are born.
I struggle to write my travels,
but verses come easy to me.
Verses are my companion
For the lonely days and nights.
They keep me safe from the beast of empty (negative) thoughts
They hold my hand and take me to a world far away from
Imaginary sounds and images.
No blackness of thoughts can touch me when you are with me.
The other world is far away from here.
This is me speaking to my inner core
My mind is pouring its thoughts on a bright screen.
A screen that will soon transfer my thoughts to the wider world.
And strike a chord somewhere with someone, one day I hope.
As I lay in my bed
Deep in my thoughts
I'm forced to close my eyes
To gather my stream of consciousness.
I see the tricks you play.
I'm lulled to sleep
Yet i wake up on the edge
Only to dive in again.

(Posting today but has been in my draft since 2019)

Perfect Storm

Nothing is working out,
Everything is fine
The world is going fine
But nothing is working out.
The surface is calm
And I'm strong
But nothing is right
It's a perfect storm.

Waiting for the wheels to move,
To kick me out of this storm.
Calm me down,
Don't let the perfect storm ruin me.

A room full of strangers

A room full of strangers,
that it was meant to be.
A room full of strangers,
I knew but didn't see.
Known and unknown,
merged together,
Like two buttered toasts.
Spoken and unspoken,
Words didn't matter.
It's a room full of strangers,
With 50 shades of black.
Nothing hurts, nothing left to see.
Night is getting dark and off I must be
Because it is a room full of strangers
And there is nothing more to see.

Child

You say a child was better,
The adult is not yours to be.
Well ofcourse father,
Why will he?
A child can't speak nor protest.
Meekly agrees to everything said.
Ofcourse a child is better,
A pliable, blendable playdoh.
With nothing to know,
Nothing to see.
But for your eyes and your words
Taken to heed.
Ofcourse a child is better,
Sunset and sunrise begin with you
For he doesn't know any other.
Life begins at 40,
For a child is not to be.

The powerful hand

You shall be remembered as the King.

Die with a Pyramid to guard you,

to be remembered for centuries.

There lived a cruel King,

a man of unimaginable wealth

Gold gilded castle with its Baroque magnificent door.

A lone man and his robot hand,

the invention of a rich man

to fight his enemies off

or scare the innocent into pliancy.

I shall turn to ashes to dust to ashes

but rest in peace forever shall I,

for you will be exhumed one day,

like the cursed Tutankhamun.

Escape

War has given me the escape
Escape from my dreary self.
Escape from this life
Dystopian novelty wrecks the brain.
Built broken castles of a wreckage.
Of a future unknown but dark,
Dark as the fear we feel today.
Fear of the black smoke and
Guns and machines.
Of air raids and the third war.
Of lost innocence and smile,
A child was born,
Five weeks old.
Cried for life,
Shrieked for comfort.
Was silenced and put to rest.
A child born into freedom,
Was chained to the shackles of death.
Spit on you,
The world is closing in.
Your paranoia is the reality now.
No end to this road,
Jump off the cliff or surrender.
You shall fade away,
Forgotten in the annals of history.
As we fight for the last breath of freedom,
Of fearless living and dominance.
You took the smile away,
You shall fade away.

Dance of Death

Enjoy the dance of death
While the world morbidly watches
The black cloud rise up.
The smoke, the wind will
Take it to the West.
Entering our lungs, this black cloud
Shall be our death.
The curtain is ferrous and red,
And we shall all enjoy the dance of death.
It's inching closer to you,
Oh sickle and hammer.
U shall be painted red,
The world will finally watch,
Your dance of death.
You drive the SUV full throttle,
Till the end of the road.
Without a care, you shall meet your end.
As the blood drops on the Black sea
The tide shall rise and you will drown in it
The world shall watch
Your dance of death.
And the Swan will swim again,
Peacefully in their Lake.
For you will be long gone,
In black smoke.
Oh sickle and hammer,
Shall be buried dead.

Dance of the snowflakes

 The dance of the snowflakes

Quietly kissing the ground

whirling around,

in their white ballroom gown.

The spotlight is on them,

burning bright up the sky

white as snow as true to the eyes.

Reflecting pearls of the white light

is it telling me something?

the dance of the snowflakes,

turning and turning around.

Heart

You beat so hard,
I struggle to breathe
I can't tame you
Or calm you down!
Stillness is what I seek at night
A soothing rhythm,
Thump! And Bump!
Like a beating drum.
I seek to calm you,
To slow your pace
And prolong your sound.
One day you will give up,
I know.
Like millions have forgone their soul.

The thumping and beating stops
And darkness engulfs.
We must sleep then
As our body rests deep within,
The earth this heart used to beat!
