Your Death!

I remember the suffocated face as breath struggled to come through your mouth. The death rattle was quite distinct. But he resuscitated you or at least tried hard. I knew you were gone then but my mind wouldn’t accept it. My mind thought this is some trickery, like a bad tide that will turn over. Then the ambulance came and kept trying! With CPR and then with the defibrillator. Nothing worked. Your brain was starved of oxygen for 20 minutes! They finally found a pulse, a faint one. And then I sat in the front seat of the ambulance and the siren went on! My first, very personal experience with an Ambulance.

You were rushed to the resuscitation room. And my anxiety shot the roof! The first thing I thought of was cancelling our flight tickets. I don’t know why, in that moment, in that tiny relatives’ waiting room for resus patients, I thought of calling the airlines to cancel the tickets. Mind has a weird way of handling shock. That was the first sleepless night at the hospital, followed by many.

The first doctor in the ICU was very worried for you. He said, the brain has been starved of oxygen for 20 minutes and I am very concerned for her consciousness. I should have taken the cue from there but didn’t. Your consciousness was lost forever, gone! Later as I read more about Hypoxic brain injury in aged patients, I failed to find one positive example of someone who had come back from that. And even if they did comeback, it wasn’t really a life they wished for. It is a life full of dependence – something you wouldn’t want. I also read that a brain cell can die with just under four minutes of lack of oxygen. Those precious moments, the golden moments of reviving someone quickly from a stroke or cardiac arrest are so important. CPR is so important!

Within the first hour of your hospitalisation, a stent was put in place! And we thought, that’s it! You survived and will forever remain, a heart patient, but will live.

You had a second cardiac arrest, and we slept at the hospital in the relatives’ accommodation. And after that, you were stable. For the next one week, I would call every morning, get angry at him for calling me and keeping the line busy. Because I was your emergency contact number and needed the line free in case the ICU called. And then, the MRI report came in. It was confirmed. Your brain damage was beyond repair. I stopped calling the ICU, I knew I had to be ready for the inevitable. But I would visit you every day. He would visit you every day. This was his way of making up for not being there for his father’s death.

For the next three weeks, I clung to your warm body. The same body that nurtured me and cared for me when it was able to. I kissed your head, full of your beautiful hair. The ICU nurses loved your hair and loved braiding it!

When they took you off the ventilator, I slept in the icy cold ICU room for three nights, no washing, no bathing. All because I didn’t want to miss the moment, you would go. But you survived another week! You no longer needed to be in the ICU, so were moved to a ward, where you suddenly became stable and instantly felt at peace. I could tell you were at peace because your heart rate was normal and so was your blood pressure. Your body was happy to be in that ward. It was full of sunlight and there was a window! I was happy to be there with you. Sleeping together, you on the bed and me on the camping bed, we got from a friend. I heard your body snore, and it made me smile. You always snored in your sleep; it was normal to those who knew you.

I wish I could talk to you about this experience. The cold ICU, the sleepless nights. The worry, the chaos. You were sleeping away while chaos surrounded you. There was crying, prayers, video and phone calls. Arguing with the doctors and the nurses, me and others hanging by a thread of hope of reviving you. Three weeks of back and forth to the Hospital. Three weeks of me hoping to see you open your eyes and acknowledging my presence. Me praying each day and encouraging you to open your eyes. You did open your eyes, finally, you did! But it was a blank stare in space, you looked up. Was it death you were looking at? You didn’t acknowledge me or anyone. You never regained consciousness.

You died in your sleep. The heart rate reduced from that of a marathon runner to that of someone at rest. Your pulse dropped and your youngest brother was there. He held your hands as your body died with the last pulse and all hope of ever reviving you died with it. But to me, you had died when your consciousness passed away. The same consciousness that made you love me, care for me that made you, my Mother!

I hate to think that your work was done. But I don’t blame you for your death, I am not angry with you for dying. No one wants to die, at least I know you didn’t, just like your mother didn’t and yet you both did. I don’t want to die, I want to live and yet one day, I will die as well and so will other people I know or don’t know.

Your death has taught me what true sadness is, what grief means. I never experienced heaviness on my chest before, the way I did when you passed away. But I will survive, I know I will, even if I think I won’t, I will.

We shall never know what happens after death until our bodies pass through that stage. I will always love you, Mom, but I am getting tired of the nightmares. Will I forget you, Mother? Did you forget your, Mother? No, you didn’t. I know that because you kept remembering her. And I wasn’t there to help you grieve her. I am so sorry to not understand your pain back then. I am so sorry to not understand your hormones and pain when you had the hysterectomy! I am so sorry to not be able to talk to you all the time. To not understand that you needed me and my time. That you needed a listening ear! I was just busy with my silly life, my job, my visas and my travels. I didn’t care for you enough and now you are gone. You don’t have to care for me or worry about me anymore. You are a free soul, doing whatever it needs to do.

But your death made me worry for the loved ones around me. Brought me closer to others. Maybe that is what death does. A constant reminder that it is just around the corner, and you need to live your life till you can and before death arrives.

During your time at the ICU, I kept thinking, so many people have passed away while my mother awaits Death. The fire at the ski resort in Turkey, the American Airlines plane crash with the military helicopter! All these lives just gone before yours.

I am happy with your death, because I know it was a beautiful death! It was the kind of death people can only wish for. Pain-free, conscious free and peaceful! The good care provided by the doctors and nurses ensured you were peaceful in your death. They didn’t want you to live a life of dependence – in a vegetative state. That would be selfish, not thinking about Pramila’s wellbeing! And I remembered your words, you always wanted to die peacefully! Without knowing, in an eternal sleep. You never wanted to be dependent on anyone. You finally got the death you wanted, Mum! And I got what I wanted! To be beside you when you die. Maybe this whole charade was played for my closure. When I heard your “end-of-life” breathing, the last night your body was alive, I knew it is a matter of hours or days that you will be gone. Gone not just in consciousness but in body as well.

I don’t know how to grieve properly, or in a healthy way. Is there a healthy way to grieve someone? He says, I wear your clothes all the time. But I wear them because I like them. I have donated so many! Days are bearable but nights are hard! Help me, move on...

Waiting for the Light

Waiting for the days to get longer,
As I walk by them, I can only smile
with my eyes.
Sinister as is this time
No festive spirit can kindle my heart warm,
I miss the embrace
The good old wine.
Waiting for the days to get brighter,
Hoping for some sunshine in my world.
A shot of life is what I'm waiting for.
Shot to my freedom from this cage.
Waiting for the warm Sun
and hugs from her, my gentle soul
My guardian angel miles away from here.
Hope the Sun shines on her, makes her spirit smile.
It's been a long time since I've smiled,
It's getting dark and cold.
The fireplace has no fuel to kindle my spirit up.
Waiting for the Light to enter this world.

Too precious to me

These moments are too precious to me.
Each moment I spend with you
Is magic to me.
The places and people,
Your laughter and thrill
Is infectious to me.
I cry lest these moments are gone,
Forever trapped in my memories.
This life with you is
Too precious to me.

Like pearls in a necklace,
Each moment and laughter
Is dear to me.
It holds my life,
My being together.
This is what
binds you and me.

Each year,
I look forward to.
I know it brings in
new experiences for me.
Our love today is deep,
Deep like the oceans we see.
The emotions run
Deep within me.

These moments,
This life with you is
Too precious to me.

My country burns

As I sit warm and cozy here,
Miles away my country burns there.
As I dream of making it big in a new city,
My old home is in shambles.
Crying, shouting, loathing and hating,
That's all I see afar.
Miles away, my friends gather in protests
Sweating in the heat, keeping the hope alive.
While I see the mockery of my country up here,
My country in shambles burns down there.
We need more than hope today,
To see India shining again.
The youth of my land,
Is a lost cause.
Running away, fleeing for their lives,
Girls returning to their homes.
But where is home?
No place on Earth is safe for my brothers anymore.
No hope, no light, no place to call their own.
I see the hope fading.
As I sit afar,
Miles away my country burns.

Darkness

Cold, cold my feet,
A chill runs down my body.
I see misty fog around me,
A path unclear still.

Flap my wings, I
paddle my feet
As hard as can I.
Head feels heavy now,
I see no light ahead of me.

Darkness has its days,
There is so much to do
In the rainy haze.
Hope keeps me afloat,
Lest I spiral out of control.

Vacuum fills the air,
Voice is lost.
Words are all that care,
Words that shine like tiny diamonds
On my charcoal slate.

Words stay with me, through
my darkness and shine.
A humble blanket of warmth for me,
My words will shine.

Privilege

What it means to be privileged?

Privilege is when you can read this post,
Like it, despise it, comment or share it.
Privilege is when you have food on your table and of the variety you like.
Privilege is when you can comment on the economical and political events of the day,
Without suffering their consequences.
Privilege is when your kith and kin are safe in beds,
And you feel sorry for the workers in the factory with long hours everyday.
Privilege is when your health is hearty,
While a part of the world compromises theirs to break the bread.
Privilege is when your only complaint is to go to work every Monday,
While some worry they may lose their wages tomorrow.
The world is full of these privileges.
A man on the road fears the dark,
While we complain of the sunrise.

Tombstone

I saw her name on the tombstone today.
A story it told of her life's struggles.
A son she begot but died before her,
World of sorrows she must have felt.
Witnessed the two great wars, she saw the world change.
Was she happier than we are today?
A life of purpose it must have been,
Of surviving against all odds.
Long life lived she, faith must have caught on.
A century of changes, an ocean of experiences, how much does one see in this lifetime?
Another tombstone caught my eye,
A soldier was laid to rest.
Proud even in his death,
'killed in action' was he.
Is this what you call,
Living a meaningful life?

Living everyday

Dressing up is an effort
Stepping out of the door is an effort
Looking after myself is an effort.
He says, "you don't love yourself" "you don't love me"
I stay quiet but inside I think it could be true.
I like the numbness. Like not feeling any thing. Food is comforting, comfort eating is what it is.
Sometimes you are just tired of fighting.
Fighting to be a better version of yourself everyday.
When you see people around you striding away.
Forward and onwards they march.
You are standing still, like a mute spectator.
Just dreaming of a better future.
Awaiting the good things to come.
Why do I always see the blackness around me?
Darkness is all I see.
Thin air, nothing to look at for me.
Even someone reading this would give me hope.
Living light after light,
Hope keeps me alive.

Moonlight

Beautiful moon light shines through my window,
moon rays shining on my smile.
A hope this moonlight gives me,
darkness is incomplete.
The rays pierce my eyes,
and angels walk down the moonriver path.
As I drift into my sleep,
Moon is ready to kiss me goodbye.
To greet another world, another window,
Awaiting it's turn.
Soon my window shall be dark
And I'll close my eyes.
I stay awake to catch the last glimmer of moon at the corner of my window,
before I close my eyes
Counting my stars as I see the moon every night.

Blurred

As the Sun goes down,
My mind is a blur.
Trapped in the blur,
Yet I'm free.
Free to choose my own way.
Blurred, blurred is my vision,
But my heart has set its eyes
On the destination.

Ghost

When I go to sleep, your ghost haunts me,
It's all the same when I'm awake.
Miles away, I'm in my mother's arms.
But you continue to be besides me.
I see you everywhere, you never left the space next to me.
I see the connection,
The chain is still unbroken.

Is this love or is this just a karmic connection?
Oh baby, please please do tell me.
Is this love or is this just a karmic connection?

The sea in my mind keeps me afloat.
I wish for those beautiful days afore.
I love this feeling inside myself,
The beauty I see in you, I see everywhere.
Thank you love, for giving me the visions,
Hoping they will last me a lifetime,
I wish you all the good luck of your time.

Is this love or is this just a karmic connection?
Oh baby, please please do tell me.
Is this love or is this just a karmic connection?

Moving On

And we continue to lead these independent lives
Seemingly erasing our past away.
We go on dreaming,
imagining like there was no yesterday.
We are lost among the millions of Christmas lights.
The speed of time takes us far away from our memories and plight.
Is this what they say to wither away?
One day you are a smiling green,
then you turn a happy red and alas,
The paleness sets in.
I seek peace in the warm coffee,
In my chaos, I search for order.
Happiness is far away.
I shall fill my life with things that give you meaning.
But it will remain empty.
I try to make sense of every word we spoke,
but a mystery it remains.
I shall put the pen down,
One final time.
When my mind stops speaking.
It is going to take a while.

Slowing down

I'm getting tired of running,
Trying to catch the butterfly.
It's too fast, too ignorant of my presence.
It's raining out here
Pouring everyday
Washing my patience away.
I don't know how long it 'll last.
How long can I hold on?
Do I really have to move on?
Such a waste of an emotion.
I truly felt there was a deep connection.
I felt like I knew everything you said and didn't say.
But it now seems a big facade.
A lie just to pass the time.
To make your time worth the while.
Maybe it was in my destiny
To learn the lessons I refuse to read.
The butterflies shall hit me again.

I Miss You

Ever felt like wondering
Where you stand today and where are you headed?
I feel like I'm walking alone
No excitement no direction
Everything is still and quiet
I hear the sound of the needles moving
Every minute every tick and tock
Feels like there is a pit in my chest.
An emptiness crawls out every night I go to bed.
This isn't a seasonal SAD.
This is a fundamental change.
I see a helpless fight within me
I want to rush to my castle within me
The darkness and cold outside doesn't bother me
I feel cold within me.
I feel lonely yet I'm not.
I need your hand,
Your presence betrays me.
I have no rhyme scheme to match my feelings.
I miss you,
It's as simple as that!

Memories fade away

Time catches on,
Memories fade away
Each passing day, we forget the yesterday
I try to hold on but I have to let go.
Since you do not catch on
I have to let go
Of the sweet sunsets
The memories
What a waste!
Of feelings I felt, of the time I spent with you.
I knew this day would come
I knew you would turn away
Hence I made so many memories.
But it's hard to let go.
Let go of you and your memories
If I latch on, you will explode
So I have to let go
And the sweet memories remain so.
In a corner of my mind.
Such a sad waste of feelings of this kind.

That Autumn Love

Sun is shining,
There's colour on your face.
That Autumn love was special.
I still remember the phase.
Parks are still green,
The wind is cool.
Time is a whirlwind.
It could have been beautiful,
had the years changed.
I remember the nights,
the places, the sounds.
The Sun is still there,
But the warmth is gone.
The silken touch of the evenings is no more.
It's cold, very cold and pitch black.
I see no sound, hear no wind.
Only dark empty nights to fill in.
Time doesn't matter anymore,
Corridors are empty.
I remember your presence,
Your feet touching the ground.
The laughter and the sound.

Conversations with a stranger

I see you boy,
Smiling and giggling with other girls.
Looking around, wondering just like me
What are these people like?
How do they live and survive?
What is their story?
I want to hear your story, oh boy.
Tell me where you come from.
Does your mamma like your work?
Did you study hard at school?
I'm a dreamer and get curious every day.
I step into your shoes and imagine,
Where are you going, where do you want to be.
Do you think the same?
Smile on and get on with life.
You are in a happy place right now.
I hope so!

Sea of poppies

Red is the colour I see,
I see no tear no blood differently.
The sea of poppies forever remain,
Sadness I feel for thee.
Great wars you all fought,
For our motherland, our peace and our children.
We stand here today to thank you,
As you lay deep-under resting today.
Fought you did for the world we have today.
Divided yet united in pain we cry today.
The tears come for different mothers,
Yet peace is what we seek every day.
You fought in the great wars,
We fight the great war within, today.
Every child, in every time
Feels the pain.
The sea of poppies remains the same.
